Veritas has been named a Leader in the inaugural IDC MarketScape: Worldwide Cyber-Recovery 2023 Vendor Assessment (doc #US49787923, November 2023). We’re pleased to receive such industry validation and believe it supports that our capabilities, breadth of portfolio, scale, and strategy meet the cyber resilience needs of all types of organizations.

A premier vendor-assessment tool, IDC MarketScape is designed to help IT buyers differentiate between offerings and to assist with their selection decisions.

Using the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) framework for cyber resilience as a guide, the IDC MarketScape evaluated the “12 most prominent cyber-recovery vendors on a worldwide basis.” The primary goal of the report was to define and score vendor offerings, capabilities, and strategies, as well as evaluate current and future market success factors. As the report shares, “differentiating between cyber-recovery solutions is a challenge for IT buyers because the vendor capabilities vary so widely.”

The IDC MarketScape vendor analysis model is designed to provide an overview of the competitive fitness of ICT suppliers in a given market. The research methodology utilizes a rigorous scoring methodology based on both qualitative and quantitative criteria that results in a single graphical illustration of each vendor’s position within a given market. The Capabilities score measures vendor product, go-to-market, and business execution in the short-term. The Strategy score measures alignment of vendor strategies with customer requirements in a three- to five-year timeframe. Vendor market share is represented by the size of the icons.

Our Strengths

The quote that stood out for me most from the report is this: “Veritas may be the best cyber-resilience solution you've never heard of.” On one hand, this means that (ouch) we have more work ahead of us to get the word out. On the other, I’m incredibly proud that we have invested in creating a comprehensive solution as recognized by IDC.

Veritas has helped organizations recover rapidly and efficiently from natural disasters, human error, and software failures for more than 30 years. It doesn’t matter where your data exists — in the cloud, on premises, at the edge, or these days, most likely “all of the above.” But today, the type of disaster folks worry about most is dealing with cyberattacks such as ransomware. And as Matt Waxman shared in a recent post, recovering from ransomware is different than recovering from a natural disaster.

Which is why we recently introduced, Veritas 360 Defensethe first extensible architecture in its space that brings together data security, protection, and governance for cyber resiliency in conjunction with an integrated and validated ecosystem of cyber security partners.

The IDC MarketScape recognized Veritas for several strengths in its report:

  • Breadth and depth of portfolio to cover detection, prevention, and recovery for both the backup environment as well as some capabilities that address primary storage
  • Deep risk identification and scoring
  • Compliance with numerous governmental standards and directives
  • An extensive and specific roadmap of new features
  • Internal testing against actual malware/ransomware infections in the Veritas REDLab.

Key Principles of Cyber Resiliency

The IDC MarketScape narrowed the field by including only vendors that could address its three principles of cyber-resiliency: data survival, data integrity, and rapid recovery with minimal data loss.

Data Survival: Will All Your Data Survive?

Ensuring data survivability has been a Veritas hallmark for decades, providing the foundation for cyber resiliency. Survivability requires the ability to understand and protect complex hybrid environments, fueled by comprehensive intelligence on data and assets. Coupled with extensive zero-trust principles and data isolation, we ensure data availability across the cloud, SaaS and on premises environments by preventing the deletion of backup data or malicious changes to data protection settings that would impact your recovery point objectives (RPOs).

Data Integrity: Can You Ensure Data is Clean and Recoverable?

The report calls it “absolutely certain data integrity.” You need absolute assurance that the data you’ve saved hasn’t been changed and that malware or vulnerabilities won’t be introduced during restoration. Immutability provides the foundation for data integrity. Once written, data cannot be changed in any manner by anyone, and the platform verifies the immutability with layers of data-integrity tests. With AI/ML support, you know when and where ransomware started to impact production data, supporting accurate and precise recovery. And to prevent recontamination of production data, you can quickly provision isolated recovery environments (IREs) to ensure that malware or vulnerabilities are not restored.

Rapid Recovery: Will You Minimize Downtime and Data Loss?

We understand the business impact that downtime and data loss can cause. As such, we flexibly orchestrate complete cross-zone, site, or cloud restoration, simplifying the complexities of cyber recovery. And we do it at scale.

The first part of rapid recovery is rapid detection. In support of your cybersecurity controls, we monitor data and users for unusual changes or activity that indicate a ransomware attack is underway. We automate attack response with tight integration to security operations via SIEM, SOAR, and XDR solutions to spawn or contribute to incident response and remediation workflows.

Once an attack is contained, forensics are underway and you have ensured data is malware-free within an IRE, you may need to stand up an entire data center in the cloud quickly to keep your organization afloat as a recovery target. In other cases, you may need more granular recovery at the object level to bring a certain set of VMs, containers, or apps back into an existing data center environment. The flexibility to recover anything—from data to application to an entire data center—is critical. Recovery at any size, due to any “disaster,” anywhere to anywhere. That’s our sweet spot: providing trusted, flexible, and rapid recovery solutions for both data and applications.

Having a well-tested plan is a major element of successful rapid recovery. To complement the tabletop exercises we strongly recommend, Veritas supplies the tools to conduct both orchestrated and automated recovery rehearsals without disrupting your production environment. Rehearsals help you discover and address protection and governance gaps, allowing your organization to act quickly with a road-tested plan in the event of an attack.

I’d sound like a typical marketing guy if I didn’t acknowledge we have room to improve. And as we know, bad actors will continue to look for new ways to compromise your data. That’s one of the many reasons why we test our solutions against real-world malware in the Veritas REDLab. We’re committed to being the best solution to provide you with confidence in the face of threats to your data, not just today — but for whatever comes next.
