Product(s): Backup Exec

Problem

When backing up multiple information stores from an Exchange Database Availability Group (DAG), to a deduplication storage folder, one or more of the information stores may report a failure as provided in the error section below.

Additionally, the delayed catalog job will also fail reporting (error message provided below).

Error Message

Backup Job Error:

V-79-57344-65193 - The backup selection '\\.pdvfs\MEDIASERVER\2\BEData\IMG000xxx'    was not successfully processed for Granular Recovery Technology (GRT).  You will not be able to restore individual items for this backup selection.

Delayed Catalog Job Error:

V-79-57344-759 - Unable to complete the operation for the following reason: VFF Open Failure.  This can be caused by low memory or disk resources.

Cause

The cause of this issue has been identified as the operation of the Anti-Malware Product installed on the server affecting the processes of the Backup Exec Deduplication Storage. For the initial customer, the product in question was Microsoft's System Center Endpoint Protection. Symantec believes that other security products may have a similar effect on Backup Exec.

Solution

You MUST also configure the exclusions within the Anti-Malware software to not monitor the following paths and processes:

Path exclusions

  • \\.pdvfs
  • \Device\Pdvfs\*.*
  • \Device\Pdvfs\PdvfsRedirector\*.*
  • X:\ (where x: is the volume letter where deduplication is installed). X:\BackupExecDeduplicationStorageFolder
  •
  • Any drive on which the disk storage exists
  • Temp location specified in Backup Exec Global Settings -> Granular Recovery Technology for backup and restore operation.
  • X:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec (covering where the Backup Exec program files are located)

Exclude the following processes (if they exist in the system) from the anti-virus installed on the Backup Exec server:

X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\beremote.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\beserver.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\bengine.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\benetns.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\pvlsvr.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\BackupExec.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\BkUpexec.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\backupexecmanagementservice.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\RemSrv64.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\bedbg.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\pdvfsservice.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\spad.exe
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\spoold.exe

X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\mtstrmd.exe (Backup Exec 20.0 and above)
X:\Program Files\Symantec or Veritas\Backup Exec\VxLockdownServer.exe (Backup Exec 20.4 and above)

[X represents drive letter where Backup Exec is installed]

Exclude the following folder from the anti-virus installed on the Backup Exec server:

X:\Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\* or X:\Program Files\Veritas\Backup Exec\*
X:\ProgramData\Symantec\CRF\* or X:\ProgramData\Veritas\CRF\*
X:\ProgramData\Symantec Shared\* or X:\ProgramData\Veritas Shared\*
X:\ProgramData\Symantec\* or X:\ProgramData\Veritas\*

Note: in Microsoft's System Center Endpoint Protection there were specific sections for path and process exclusions and the path of the Backup Exec Program files folder was required for the process exceptions. Other software suites may have different syntax and requirements against how these settings would be applied.
