Attempting to boot from a multilingual Recovery-CD for Backup Exec System Recovery (BESR) or Symantec System Recovery (SSR) products, the Windows loading screen appears, then an error below occurs failing to boot into the recovery environment. Using a language specific recovery CD boots successfully.
"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware- or software change might be the cause. Status: 0xc0000017 Info: An unexpected error occurred."
The WIM (Windows Imaging File Format) present in the Multilingual Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD) is larger than in the single language Recovery Disk and requires more RAM in order to load. On system low system memory client computers the Multilingual recovery disks are unable to load the WIM due to a lack of memory because of the resources used by Data Execution Prevention. Once DEP is disabled more RAM is available and the SRD will successfully load the WIM allowing the computer to boot into the Symantec Recovery Environment.
--> MEMORY PROTECTION
--> EXECUTION PREVENTION
If your operating system supports Data Execution Prevention, this setting can prevent virus/worm attacks that create memory buffer overflows by running code where only data is allowed.
