Storage Foundation 5.0 MP3 may report license expired even when the license key is valid

Problem

Storage Foundation 5.0 MP3 may report license expired even when the license key is valid.

Error Message

VxVM vxdctl ERROR V-5-1-1589 enable failed: License has expired or is not available for operation

Solution

Problem description

With Veritas Volume Manager (VxVM) 5.0 MP1 RP5 and MP3, vxconfigd may lose licensing information due to a file descriptor (fd) leak. Engineering established that the leaked fd's belong to IPC connections between vold and vxesd (eventsource daemon) were resulting in valid license keys being reported as expired.

When commands such as "vxdctl enable" are performed, the following error may be reported:

# vxdctl enable
VxVM vxdctl ERROR V-5-1-1589 enable failed: License has expired or is not available for operation

Patch information

Additionally 5.0 MP1 RP5 has two other fd leaks with respect to vxesd which are already fixed in 5.0 MP3.

Both 5.0 MP3 RP1 and RP2 have hot fixes available. Please contact support if you require any of the following patches:

5.0 MP3 RP1 HF11 onwards
5.0 MP3 RP2 HF1 onwards

Superincident etrack reference: 1673764
