"An invalid parameter was specified" is reported when trying to restore a Directory or Folder to the NetApp Filer using the NDMP option.

Problem

"An invalid parameter was specified" is reported when trying to restore a Directory or Folder to the NetApp Filer using the NDMP option.

Solution

When attempting to perform a restore of any Folder or a directory from an NetApp Filer backup using the NDMP option, the restore Job fails with following error:

Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000fe49 - An invalid parameter was specified.
Final error category: Job Errors

If you try restoring the Complete Volume or any individual file from the same backup the Job completes fine and restores the data.

The Debug log from the NDMP device shows following errors:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[ndmpd:21]: Error code: NDMP_ILLEGAL_ARGS_ERR
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

While SGMON shows error :
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BENGINE:  [5604]     ERROR: 9 Error: Illegal arguments in request
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two Potential causes of this error:

Resolution #1:
Check: Job Properties::Settings::General and note the Backup Method. This error can occur if the Backup Method is set to anything other then FULL. Then further down the Setting list, click on NDMP.  Set the level and type of backup you desire here. Retry the job.

Resolution #2

This issue appears when the Direct Access Restore [DAR] option is disabled on the NetApp Filer. To check if this is the cause, connect to the Filer using Telnet and type "options" and Hit enter.
Check if you see the Following entry :
ndmpd.offset_map.enable off

To be able to restore a Directory from NDMP backup you need to have Direct Access Restore [DAR] option enabled on the Filer. To Enable option on the filer, type this command using telnet :
options ndmpd.offset_map.enable on
for more information about the Direct Access Restore feature please refer to your NDMP Manufacturers guide.

Note : To restore any directory from NDMP backup set that was performed without the DAR option enabled, Follow these steps:
1. In the restore Job properties, Click on NDMP option.
2. Uncheck "Enable Direct Access Restore" option and Run the restore. Disabling this option will allow you to restore the Directory but with a very slow speed. For more information refer to Backup Exec Administrator's guide.
