Problem

Access Denied when selecting any database listed under Microsoft Sharepoint Server Farms

Error Message

Failed to access SERVERNAME\DATABASE

Solution

This article addresses two reasons this error message may occur when trying to add Sharepoint database resources in the 'Selections' pane of a 'Backup Job Properties' window or 'New Backup Selection List' window.

Cause 1:
This issue may occur when the Sharepoint databases reside on a Microsoft SQL Server separate from the Microsoft Sharepoint Web Server and the Backup Exec Remote Agent is running on a different NDMP port then the Web Server.

Example:
Server 1 (192.168.1.1)(MOSS 2007 Web Server) has the Backup Exec Remote Agent NDMP Port set to 10000
Server 2 (192.168.1.2)(MOSS 2007 SQL Server) has the Backup Exec Remote Agent NDMP Port set to 11000

Debug output from Server 2 when attempting selections of the databases:
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:13 ndmpConnectEx: Querying the neighbour advertisement cache to discover information on 'SERVER1' ...
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:14 @@@@@@@MyCloseSocket called with sockfd = 1164(0x48c) retval = 0
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:14 ndmpEstablishConnectionUsingNoSpecificAdapter: Could not connect to remote address 192.168.1.1 and port 11000 Errorno : 10061
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:14 ndmpConnectEx: unable to connect using NetworkOptions to SERVER1
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 BETCPConnection::LoopThroughListAndConnect: Could not connect to remote address "192.168.1.1" Error:10061.
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 @@@@@@@MyCloseSocket called with sockfd = 1164(0x48c) retval = 0
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 BETCPConnection::CreateConnectionFromHostAndPort: Remote Host: "SERVER1": There were no addresses returned, belonging to family: IPv6
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 BETCPConnection::CreateConnectionFromHostAndPort: Could not create a connection to "SERVER1" because attempts with both IPv4 and IPv6 protocols failed
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 ndmpConnectEx: All attempts to connect to 'SERVER1' failed
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 ndmpConnectEx: failed to connect to 'SERVER1'
[3504] 10/14/08 13:33:15 Error connecting to NDMP SPSv2 on SERVER1:10000.

Note: Even though the debug output shows "Error connecting to NDMP SPSv2 on SERVER1:10000", which is a connection to port 10000 the agent did NOT attempt to connect to the web server on port 10000. This is a generic debug message using the default port number for NDMP.

Solution:
All Servers in the MOSS / Sharepoint server farm must run the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the same NDMP port.  Please see the related documentation below for information on changing the NDMP port for the Backup Exec Remote Agent

Cause 2:
The Backup Exec Sharepoint DLL's are not loaded with the Backup Exec Remote Agent on any server in the farm.

Example debug output with Sharepoint DLL's not loading:
[1852] 10/14/08 14:18:38   bedssps2.dll could not be loaded: The specified module could not be found.
[1852] 10/14/08 14:18:38   bedssps3.dll could not be loaded: The specified module could not be found.

Solution:
Be sure the DLL files referenced are in place on the server.  If only the Backup Exec Remote Agent is installed, the files would be located in c:\program files\Symantec\backup exec\raws\ by default.  If this debug is from a Backup Exec Media server, the files would be located in c:\program files\Symantec\backup exec\ by default.  If they are not present, run a repair install in the case of a media server and reinstall the Remote Agent in the case of a remote server.  If the files are present and do not load, please contact Veritas Technical Support to troubleshoot this issue with the DLL's not loading.
