SQLServr.exe and SQLAgent.exe files do not appear to be backed up from a Windows 2008 server running Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Problem

SQLServr.exe and SQLAgent.exe files do not appear to be backed up from a Windows 2008 server running Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Cause

On a Windows 2008 server, these executable files are part of the System State and are therefore protected by a System State backup. By design, Backup Exec operates an Active File Exclusion because the files are part of the System State. As such they will not be backed up as part of a File System backup and in a similar manner to any files limited by an Active File Exclusion no entry is reported in the backup job logs regarding the omission.

Solution

After performing a File System backup of a volume on a Windows 2008 server that contains the SQL Server 2008 program files, a review of the restore selections shows that SQLServr.exe and SQLAgent.exe located in the ..\BINN folder of the installation path are excluded from the backup even though the backup job does not report any exceptions.

NOTES:
  • The issue does not affect the ability to restore data that has been backed up using the Backup Exec SQL Agent that is contained in the SQL databases.
  • If performing a complete recovery of the server, restoring the System State will recover the files
