Problem

 Windows 2008 Hyper-V GRT (Granular Recovery Technology) and Non-GRT server restore fails with the error: "A failure occurred querying the Writer status".

Error Message

"V-79-57344-65233 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status".

The job log shows the following:

"0xe000fed1 - A failure occurred querying the Writer Status".
-- "Restore- VRTSRV::\\ServerA\Hyper-V?Virtual?Machine\server V-79-57344-65233 - Writer Name: Microsoft Hyper-V, Writer ID: 66841CD4-6DED-4F4B-8F17-FD23F8DDC3DE, Last error: 0x800423f3, State: 0013.
-- V-79-57344-65233 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.
-- V-79-57344-65233 - A failure occurred querying the Writer status.
Connection to the restore target has been lost. Operation canceled".

Cause

This error can occur if the Hyper-V server being restored is not listed in the Hyper-V Server Manager.

  • The server being restored "ServerA" will not be listed in the Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer .xml file located in Program Files\Symantec\Backup Exec\logs.
  • Server ServerA will not listed in the Hyper-V manager Console.

Solution

Add the server to the Hyper-V Manager Console.  Server ServerA should now be listed in the Microsoft Hyper-V VSS Writer .xml file.  The restore job will now perform a "destroy" operation on the old server and restore a new one.
