Problem

TechAlert: On environments with NetBackup 6.5.2 or 6.5.3 master servers, data loss may occur when scheduled backups are erroneously skipped on days where the addition of a daylight savings time (DST) offset occurs.

Solution

Introduction:
Due to incorrect recalculation of schedules resulting from the addition of a daylight savings time (DST) offset, some versions of NetBackup may improperly skip backups that come due during open backup windows on (or including) the day of the time change.  Since these jobs do not run, there is no notification in the Activity Monitor.

What is Affected:
Master servers running the following versions of NetBackup Server / Enterprise Server are affected:
  • NetBackup 6.5.2 (including 6.5.2A)
  • NetBackup 6.5.3
All supported platforms are affected.

How to Determine if Affected:
Examine policies for open windows during the day of the time change.  Both Frequency and Calendar schedule types have been seen to be affected by issues related to the time change.

Formal Resolution:
The formal resolution to this issue has been included in the following patch release:
  • NetBackup 6.5 Release Update 3 Hotfix 1 (6.5.3.1)
NetBackup 6.5.3.1 is available from "Related Documents" section below and can be found on the Support Web site at the following link:    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/downloads.jsp?pid=15143

Please be aware that this hotfix requires prior installation of the NetBackup 6.5.3 Release Update.

After applying the hotfix to the master server, schedules should run as expected.  (This behavior is documented in TechPDF 318346, NetBackup Schedules and Daylight Savings Time, linked below.)

Workaround
Currently, there are no known workarounds to this issue, aside from removing affected days from policy windows - which may be unfeasible.  Manual backups of affected policies may be executed to ensure data is protected.

It is important to note that DST offsets are usually only applied twice a year.  Backups should function as expected on other days of the year.

Best Practices:
1. Symantec recommends performing a Full backup as a best practice, prior to and after any changes are made to your environment.
2. Always keep the environment up-to-date with the latest patches or hot-fixes.
