Problem

Microsoft Security Update (KB954606) for SQL server 2005 Service Pack 2, (KB970892) Service Pack 3 and (KB2463332) Service Pack 4 fails to patch the named Backup Exec (BKUPEXEC) SQL instance.

Error Message

MSP Error: 29565 SQL Server Setup cannot upgrade the specified instance because the previous upgrade did not complete. Start the Remote Registry service and go to Add/Remove Programs, select the Change button for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and then select SQL instance BKUPEXEC.

Solution

Microsoft SQL 2005 patch (KB 954606) Service Pack 2, (KB970892) Service Pack 3 and (KB2463332) Service Pack 4 fails to install when attempting to patch the named Backup Exec SQL instance (BKUPEXEC) manually or thru Windows Update.
 

 
Reviewing the SQL installation logs (C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\summary.txt and C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9_Hotfix_KB954606_sqlrun_sql.msp.log) the following error is reported:

RESOLUTION:
 

 
On the Backup Exec Media Server change the following registry value from 1 to 0 and install the Microsoft SQL patch:
 

 
WARNING: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
 

 
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQLServer\MSSQL.1\Setup\Resume
 
Change the value data from 1 to 0 (Figure 1)
 

 
Note: If multiple SQL instances are present on the Backup Exec Media server the registry key could be (MSSQL, MSSQL.2, etc)

If the media server is a 64bit machine, edit the  below registry key from 1 to 0 (Figure 2), and rerun the patch installation.
