Problem

Error Message

"Error 1406: Could not write value ViewComputerTree to key \software\Symantec\backup exec system recovery\7.0 "

Solution

During the install of Backup Exec System Recovery the following error may occur after the "Copying Files" section of the install has finished:

    "Error 1406: Could not write value ViewComputerTree to key \software\Symantec\backup exec system recovery\7.0 "

    The cause of this error is restricted permissions to the defined registry path. The path may vary depending on the source of the access issue.

    Resolution:
    If the error is observed while the install is running, leave the error window open and edit the registry as follows:

    Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows Registry Editor can have disastrous results on a server Operating System. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows Registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the Registry Editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

      1. Goto StartRun and type REGEDT32.EXE
      2. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SYMANTEC\Backup Exec System Recovery\7.0
      3. Right click on the key and select Permissions.
      4. Confirm the following accounts are listed with full control:
        - SYSTEM
        - Administrator
        - Administrators
        5. Select "Retry" from the error prompt.

        NOTE: If the install had been aborted, modify the registry as listed above and reattempt the install.
