Error messages that can appear when restoring via the Granular Restore Option:
Unable to find the Exchange Information File (EIF):
(a) "Make sure the backup is of a machine running Microsoft Exchange 2003 or 2007"
(b) "Check that your backup software is the same version as this software."
(c) "Make sure that your backup includes the Exchange binaries as well as the database and log files"

GRO requires an instance of the Microsoft Distributed Transaction Coordinator (MSDTC) due to BESR VSS provider's COM+ dependencies. Exchange 2007 removes the requirement for the clustered MSDTC resource; MSDTC cluster resource requires the use of shared storage in the cluster. Microsoft does not recommend adding a shared storage to a SCR/CCR environment.  Because of this backup, and/or truncate Exchange logs in an Exchange SCR/CCR configuration and/or retrieve mailboxes /messages of information stores from such Exchange configuration through the use of Granular Restore Option (GRO).

Be sure that the following is true regarding the recovery point image from which items are to be recovered from:
  1. Use the Recovery Point Browser to open the recovery point and verify that the Exchange Information File (EIF) is located within a sub-folder named BACKUP INFORMATION located at the root of the system volume (i.e. C:\BACKUP INFORMATION).
  2. Make sure that version of GRO being use is the same or newer then the version of BESR use to create the recovery point.
  3. The recovery point set includes all volumes  containing Exchange binaries, its database and log files. Exchange binaries, database and log files must reside, in its entirety on each node of the cluster and Exchange services are not distributed.
  4. Open the .EIF file in Notepad and verify that the information stores refer to valid names of the original Exchange server and that the drive letters that it refers corresponds to a recovery point image file within the recovery point set.

If the above items have been verified please contact Symantec Technical support for further assistance.
