Problem

Some USB keyboards or USB mouse take several minutes to initialize while the system is booted.

Cause

Some USB keyboards or USB mice may take several minutes to initialize while the system is booted into the Symantec Recovery Disk (SRD). This can also happen after a system recovery to different hardware. Because of this unusual behavior, users may think that the keyboard and mouse don't work. In most cases, the keyboard and mouse will detect if enough time is allowed for the plug and play to occur. This can take up to an hour or more, depending on the system.

Solution

• Ensure that there are no additional USB devices are connected to the restored system, other then a USB keyboard or mouse. If other USB devices are connected during this phase, disconnect them and power cycle the system to reattempt the PnP.
• Use a traditional, wired keyboard or mouse to boot from. Wireless devices will not function until the drivers for those devices are loaded. This same behavior can also occur with specialty mice and keyboards, such as ergonomic or specialty devices.
• Ensure that the system BIOS is set not set to boot from USB/removable devices.
• Try switching the keyboard or the mouse to the USB port on the front side.
