When performing a backup of Microsoft's Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) data, the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service will crash if DFSR is configured to replicate an entire disk volume.

Problem

When performing a backup of Microsoft's Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) data, the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service will crash if DFSR is configured to replicate an entire disk volume.

Error Message

0xe000fe30 - A communications failure has occurred.

This behavior has been reported when DFSR is configured with a share which replicates an entire hard disk volume. The backups of the Shadow Copy Components on a DFSR server will cause the Backup Exec Remote Agent for Windows Systems service to crash during a backup operation. 
 
The following error may be seen in the Application Event logs: 
Type: Error
Event: 1000
Source: Application Error
Description:
Faulting application beremote.exe, version 11.0.7170.32, faulting module ndmpsrvr.dll, version 11.0.7170.42, fault address 0x0000000000121a76.

Solution

 Replicating an entire volume with DFSR is supported as long as the drive does not contain any of the following information:
  • The Paging File
  • The Windows System Directory

A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.
