When performing a backup of Microsoft's Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) data, the backup of Shadow Copy Components will complete successfully with a 0 byte count.

Problem

When performing a backup of Microsoft's Distributed File System Replication (DFSR) data, the backup of Shadow Copy Components will complete successfully with a 0 byte count.

Cause

This behavior has been reported when DFSR is configured with two or more shares, and one or more of the shares is configured to replicate an entire volume of a hard disk. The backups of the Shadow Copy Components on a DFSR server with this configuration will complete successfully, but will have a zero-byte count and contain no data.

Solution

Replicating an entire volume with DFSR is supported as long as the drive does not contain any of the following information:

  • The Paging File
  • The Windows System Directory
