Problem

TECHALERT: A potential for data loss has been discovered in NetBackup Server/Enterprise Server when a client is running the Lotus Notes agent. If an individual database file is over 2GB, it is skipped by the backup but the backup exits with a Status Code 0 (successful).

Solution

Introduction:
A potential for data loss has been discovered in NetBackup Server/Enterprise Server when a client is running the Lotus Notes agent.  If an individual database file is over 2GB, it will be skipped by the backup with "<file> is a database link" error.  However, the backup exits with Status Code 0 (successful).

What is Affected:
  • NetBackup Server/Enterprise Server 6.0 MP5, 6.0 MP6
  • NetBackup Server/Enterprise Server 6.5, 6.5.1, 6.5.1A, 6.5.2, 6.5.2A
How to Determine if Affected:
If ALL of the following conditions are true, data loss has been known to occur:
  • A NetBackup Client is running one of the affected versions listed above
  • This client is running the Lotus Notes Agent on a supported platform
  • An individual database file (such as .nsf, .box, .ntf) within this Lotus Notes Database is over 2GB
  • A backup that is configured to protect this database
Client Log Files:
The following are excerpts that will be seen in the client's bpbkar log when this issue occurs:
log.062208(48964): 06:15:48.592 [27384] <4> NBLN_DbBackupOpen(): INF - <db file path> is a database link.  Updated size with the actual size of database link.

Formal Resolution:
The formal resolution to this issue (Etrack 1275903) is included in the following NetBackup releases:
  • NetBackup Enterprise Server 6.0 Maintenance Pack 7 (MP7)
  • NetBackup Enterprise Server 6.5 Release Update 3 (6.5.3)
These releases are available at the support web site at:
 http://www.symantec.com/business/support/downloads.jsp?pid=15143

Note:  The resolutions mentioned above will prevent this issue from occurring to future backups, however, affected data on backups performed prior to the implementation of this resolution will not be recoverable.     If there is a database file present on the client running the Lotus Notes Agent that is in excess of 2GB and a resolution is not yet available, please contact Technical Support for further instructions:    http://www.symantec.com/business/support/contact_techsupp.jsp?pid=15143

Workaround:
If affected with a database file over 2GB, a potential workaround would be to run a compact operation on the database to reduce it to under 2GB.  However, if any database files have the potential of exceeding 2GB, it is recommended to apply the formal resolution (mentioned above) as soon as possible.

If the workaround noted is not feasible, please contact NetBackup Technical Support and reference this document ID to obtain a fix for this issue.

Best Practices:
Symantec strongly recommends the following best practices:
1. Always perform a full backup prior to and after any changes to your environment.
2. Always make sure that your environment is running the latest version and patch level.
