Problem

Service Pack installation failing with "Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'Domain\User'" or Backup Exec upgrade is not completing successfully.

Error Message

When trying to install a Service Pack  or any hotfix for Backup Exec, or upgrade from a previous version of Backup Exec an error is seen in the installation log file.

V-225-206: Cannot open user default database. Login failed. Login failed for user 'Domain\User'. ***To search for information about this error, click here

V-225-210: Unable to connect to SQL Server. ***To search for information about this error, click here

V-225-118: Error installing BEDB ***To search for information about this error, click here

The above error message would appear if the account used for installation doesn't have required privileges on the Database. The above error would also occur if the Backup Exec Service Account is different than the account used to log in to Windows is during the upgrade.

Solution

Solution 1:

Login to the Windows using the BESA (Backup Exec Service Account) and run the update.

Solution 2:

1. Open BEUtility from X:\Program Files\veritas\Backup Exec ( where 'X' is the drive within which the software is installed. By Default it would the 'C' drive).

2. Right Click on the Server name and select "Change Database Access" to grant access to the Database for the account that you are using to install the Service Pack.

Solution 3 :

 1. Make sure that SQL instance for backup exec is running on a local system account
