Cause

Backup of a Remote Server may fail with the above mentioned error message if any of the following condition is met:

A: Remote server is selected with Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) (through Favorites or Domains - Active Directory Domains) and GLOBAL excludes are configured.

B: Global excludes for the remote server are added more than twice after the backup job is created.

Solution

  • Backup Exec 2010:
This issue has been resolved in Backup Exec 2010 for Windows Servers revision 2896 Hotfix 344584. It can be downloaded from the following link:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126191

  • Backup Exec 12.5:
This has been resolved in Backup Exec 12.5 for Windows Servers revision 2213 Hotfix 340792. It can be downloaded from the following link: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126509

  • Backup Exec 12.0:

This has been resolved in Backup Exec 12.0 for Windows Servers revision 1364 Service Pack 5. It can be downloaded from the following link:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH136143

Workaround:

For condition A:
Add the remote server (using either IP address or NETBIOS) in the backup selection from under the User Defined Selection.

For condition B:
  1. Add excludes for a remote server in the backup job instead of Global Excludes.
    OR
  2. Make all required excludes in the Global Excludes list first, and then create the backup jobs. Do not edit the global excludes once the backup jobs have been created.
