When trying to add a Microsoft Office Sharepoint Farm in backup selections an access denied error occurs

Problem

When trying to add a Microsoft Office Sharepoint Farm in backup selections an access denied error occurs.

Error Message

Unable to add a Microsoft Office Sharepoint Farm in backup selections: Error access denied when adding the server farm to the selection list.

This issue has been addressed in TECH58121:
If the aforementioned Technote does not resolve the issue, perform a debug of the SharePoint Agent. Refer to the Related documents section.

The error access denied can occur if the web front end server, in a Windows SharePoint Services 3.0, has had the admininstrator shares have been removed from the server.

The debug of the SPSWrapperV3.exe will show the following:

[1bc4] 05/20/08 10:47:49 Message ---Directory \\localhost\c$ does not exist or the SQL Server service account and the DOMAIN\serviceaccount service account do not have permission to read or write to the backup folder. Specify a different directory.
[1bc4] 05/20/08 10:47:49 Source ---Microsoft.SharePoint
[1bc4] 05/20/08 10:47:49 TargetSite ---Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.Backup.SPBackupRestoreHistory Get(System.String).

Solution

1. Confirm that the account listed in the SPSWrapper.log has the correct permissions and user rights to backup.

2. Ensure that the \\localhost\c$ does exist and is accessible by the account used for backup.
