How to connect to a remote restore or initiate a troubleshooting session when a workstation client or server has been booted into the Symantec Recovery Environment using the SRD (Symantec Recovery Disk) CD-Rom
To remotely connect to machine that is booted into the Symantec Recovery Environment, for the purpose of assisting with or troubleshooting a recovery point image restore, perform the following steps:
1. If a copy of the pcAnywhere software application is not available, download a Trialware copy of the product from the Symantec website via the following link:
Note: The trialware version of the product will be the current shipping product version.
Install it on a suitable machine on the same subnet as the desktop client or server, to where the image is going to be restored.
2. On the target machine to where the recovery point image is to be restored, with networking support enabled from the menu of the Symantec recovery environment, select the Network tab and then select Start the pcAnywhere Thin Host from the menu. When this process starts up, a dialog box will appear with an IP address. This IP address will be used as the IP address to Quick Connect to, from the PCanywhere client, to the PCanywhere thin host running on the workstation or server where the image is to be restored.
3. After installing the pcAnywhere software application on the server/workstation, start up this application. The IP addressed used in the example 10.66.51.2, which was assigned by a DHCP Server, at the server running the thin host application. A static IP address could also be used, in some cases, when applicable. (Figure 1)
Listed below is the screen that shows when connecting to and after logging in to the thin host client. (Figure 2)
Note: A dialog box will first appear, prompting for user login credentials. The login name to use is symantec, and the password is recover. Once the credentials have been entered, the pcAnywhere client can now remotely control the recovery process on the target server.
4. Start up a WEBEX session with the remote machine from the same workstation or server running the pcAnywhere client application and proceed with assisting or troubleshooting the recovery point image restore.
