Exchange GRT restore from tape fails with error 0xe0001204 - The path on the media server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items must be on a local NTFS volume on the media server

Attempt to restore mailboxes/mails from a GRT enabled backup set of an Exchange Information Store fails with the above mentioned error message, even though the staging area is a Local NTFS Volume.

Final error: 0xe0001204 - The path on the media server for staging temporary restore data when restoring individual items must be on a local NTFS volume on the media server. Check the job log for details.
Final error category: Resource Errors



The above error can occur if the Virtual File Filter (VFF) Driver is not properly installed on the Media Server. SGMON debug log displays the information as shown in Figure 1.

One possible cause for this error is that the version of Exchange the mailbox was backed up from does not match the version of Exchange that the mailbox is being restored to i.e. an Exchange 2003 mailbox cannot be restored to an Exchange 2007 server.

In this situation, the same version of Exchange will need to be installed to stage a restore and the mailbox data can be migrated afterwards.

In addition:

The Exchange servers must be at the same Service Pack level.

The storage groups and databases must already exist on the destination server, and must have the same names as the original storage groups or databases. 

The destination server must have the same Organization and AdministrativeGroup name as the source server.

The destination databases must be configured so that they can be overwritten.

If the versions of Exchange are confirmed to match and the other conditions above are met, continue with the solutions below:



1. Verify or provide a valid NTFS staging path:

a. Confirm the staging path in use:

  • In BE 2010 - Go to the Restore job - Properties - Settings - Advanced
  • In BE 2012 - Click the Backup Exec button - Configuration and Settings - Backup Exec Settings. Select Granular Recovery Technology on the left.
b. The path here should exist and be located on a local NTFS volume on the media server. Change the path if needed. (If an MMS will be executing the restore, the path has to be available in that MMS in particular.)

Note: If in a CASO environment, the global settings that will govern the restore are the ones from the server in which the job is kicked off. If done from the CAS (central admin server) BUT executed by MMS (managed media server), make sure staging path on CAS actually exists on MMS local NTFS volume.


2. Check the Virtual File Filter (VFF) Driver and its status:

a. Go to Start | Run | MSINFO32 
b. Under the Software Environment -- System Drivers look for Virtfile.sys


3. If Virtfile.sys is missing or is not functioning, the Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server should be uninstalled and reinstalled:

a. In the Backup Exec Administrator Console, click on Tools--Install options and License Keys on this Media Server.
b. In the Enter License Keys window, make a note of the Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server License key and remove it.
c. Ensure that Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server is not checked in the Symantec Backup Exec Options window and click on Next.
d. Click on Install.
e. Repeat the process to re-enter the Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server License key to reinstall Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server.

Note: The Media Server requires a reboot after installation of Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server.  Also, even though Backup Exec 12 and above is able to utilize a GRT Backup to disk (B2D) on a remote non-NTFS Volume, the staging area for the restore from B2D or tape must still reside on the local media server.
