When running a backup, the job hangs at 1% with status message "Reconciling the volume".

Typically, this happens more on incremental backups. A check of the VProSvs service reveals that the process is not actually hung and is using system resources.


This behaviour is most often cause by an improper Windows shut down / reboot. During the Windows boot-up process, the SYMSNAP driver loads before the file system, and unloads immediately after the file system driver unloads during a shutdown / reboot. This process allows BESR / SSR to track all sector changes real-time, then commit those sector change to the next scheduled incremental file. If the operating system is improperly shut down, another 3rd party process causes disrpution, or for any reason the SYMSNAP driver does not unload properly, the captured changes for that windows session is lost. Thus, on the next reboot, when the next BESR / SSR occurs, the table of changes must be rebuilt. To do this BESR / SSR compares the contents of the last succesful base backup files to the contents of the volume, which can be a timely process.

Improper Windows shutdowns / reboots are typically logged in the SYSTEM Windows event log as a critical event. Here is a sample of a Windows 2008 R2 critical event:

Description:   The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.


It is recommended that the reconcile process be allowed to process.
If that is not possible, the reconcile process can be interupted and a new base image created.
Right-mouse click on the BESR / SSR task bar icon.
  1. Select Cancel Current Operation. This will stop the current backup. (If the reconcile process cannot be stopped, stop the BACKUP EXEC SYSTEM RECOVERY or SYMANTEC SYSTEM RECOVERY service for a few seconds until the backup stops, then restart the service.
  2. Open the BESR / SSR console.
  3. Click on the Advanced tab.
  4. Click on the Backup Jobs sub-tab.
  5. Locate and right-mouse click on the backup stopped in Step 2 and select Run Backup With Options.
  6. Select New recovery point set.
  7. Click OK.

A new recovery point base image will be created. If the job is set to retain only a certain amount of recovery point sets, this will happen once the job is completed.
