The option to change the catalog location is not available on a Managed Media Server or Managed Backup Exec Server in a Central administration server (CASO) environment.

Problem

In a CASO environment the Managed Media Server (MMS) or Managed Backup Exec Server (MBES) catalog location is set to Central Administration Server (Centralized) and the option to change the setting to Managed Media Server (Distributed) or Both Servers (Replicated) is not available (FIGURE 1) - Backup Exec 2010.   (FIGURE 2) - Backup Exec 2012 and above.

Solution

Backup Exec 2010

If the Backup Exec for Windows SAN Shared Storage Option (SSO) is installed on the MMS server then the catalog location can only be centralized by virtue of the SSO option. Catalogs will be stored on the Primary SSO or CASO server.

In order to have the ability to change the catalog location on the MMS server to any of the three available options remove the SSO License option from the MMS server.

Backup Exec 2012 and Above

If the MBES Configuration option "Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restores" is enabled on the MBES server then the catalog location can only be centralized by virtue of the SSO option.
Catalogs will be stored on the CASO server.

NOTE: SSO option was changed to "Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restores"  in Backup Exec 2012 and above.

In order to have the ability to change the catalog location on the MBMS server to any of the three available options un check/remove the remove "Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restores" option. (FIGURE 3)
