Getting error "Disk and diskgroup versions are incompatible" when adding a new disk of type cdsdisk to an existing disk group created that was created using VxVM 3.5 or earlier.

Problem

Getting error "Disk and diskgroup versions are incompatible" when adding a new disk of type cdsdisk to an existing disk group created that was created using VxVM 3.5 or earlier.

Error Message

VxVM vxdg ERROR V-5-1-10127 associating disk-media with :
Disk and diskgroup versions are incompatible

Solution

Diskgroups created in VxVM 3.5 or earlier does not support CDS disks. With 4.0 and above, when a disk is initialized from command line (vxdisksetup) or VEA by default, sets the disk layout to type "cdsdisk". Re-initialize the disk as sliced and add it to the disk group.
# /etc/vx/bin/vxdisksetup -i <diskname> format=sliced
#  vxdg -g <diskgroup> adddisk <dmname>=<diskname>
