Problem

STATUS CODE 26: Backup attempts failing with NetBackup Status Code 26 (client/server handshaking failed).

Solution

Overview:
Backup attempts failing with NetBackup Status Code 26 (client/server handshaking failed).

Troubleshooting:
Enable the bptm log file on media server and review the media server's bp.conf file.  Confirm the bpclntcmd -hn <server_name> command returns successfully for all SERVER= entries in the media server's bp.conf file.

Log files:
In the media server's bptm log file, the following messages are observed:

Resolution:
Use of the bpclntcmd -hn <server_name> command (correct usage of the command outlined in TechNote 286620, found below, in the Related Documents section) indicates one of the servers in the media server's bp.conf file is not correctly configured within the environment's name resolution setup.  After removing this SERVER= line from the bp.conf file, the backup completes successfully.
