Veritas Cluster Server requires Solaris 10 NFS Patch 118833-24 to allow NFS agents to work correctly

Problem

Veritas Cluster Server requires Solaris 10 NFS Patch 118833-24 to allow NFS agents to work correctly

Solution

It has been found that insufficient NFS patch levels in Solaris 10 will cause the Veritas Cluster Server NFS agent to produce many errors in the engine_A.log.
This causes unexpected NFS resource monitoring failures. Without these patches, expect the NFS agent to have great difficulty in monitoring NFS resources, returning error messages such as the ones below:

2006/10/24 04:32:46 VCS ERROR V-16-1-7005 (sydlaksa01) NFS:/opt/VRTSvcs/bin/NFS/monitor:???:RPC call to 100005 failed with status 5

2006/10/24 04:42:57 VCS ERROR V-16-2-13074 (sydlaksa01) The monitoring program for resource(nfsb_daemon) has consistently failed to determine the resource status within the expected time. Agent is restarting (attempt number 1 of 1) the resource.

- The RPC status 5 error relates to RPC_TIMEOUT
- The RPC objects 100005 relates to nfsd and 100003 relates to mountd
- RPC call failures to either 100005 and 100003 are both indications that NFS is not patched sufficiently

This behaviour was experienced in testing at Solaris 10 NFS patch level 118833-16. After patching to 118833-24, the problems relating to RPC timeouts are resolved.

Symantec strongly recommends all servers using Veritas Cluster Server on Solaris 10 to apply Patch 118833-24 at a minimum.
