GENERAL ERROR: The Veritas Private Branch Exchange (PBX) is logging to the system logs.

Problem

GENERAL ERROR: The Veritas Private Branch Exchange (PBX) is logging to the system logs.

Error Message

Nov 29 17:35:43 VERITAS: [ID 702911 user.error] No proxy found.
Nov 29 17:41:53 last message repeated 10 times

Solution

Overview:
The Veritas Private Branch Exchange (PBX) software is a new package that is installed along with Veritas NetBackup (tm) 6.0.  By default, PBX will log messages to the system log /var/adm/messages or /var/adm/syslog.  This can cause additional system logging that may not be desired by the system administrator.  The messages written to the system logs will contain the same informational and warning messages that are written to the PBX logs.  This option can be disabled using the vxlogcfg command.

Troubleshooting:
To verify the logging settings for PBX,  run the following command.  This is an example from a Solaris 9 system:
# cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
# ./vxlogcfg -p 50936 -o 103 -l
Configuration settings for originator 103, of product 50936...
LogDirectory = /opt/VRTSpbx/log/
DebugLevel = 1
DiagnosticLevel = 0
LogToStdout = False
LogToStderr = False
LogToOslog = True
..

Log Files:
The /var/adm/messages file may show the following messages during startup or while PBX is running.  If this error occurs when starting or stopping NetBackup it can be safely ignored.  Otherwise this could indicate that one or more of the NetBackup daemons is not running and should be investigated.
Nov 29 17:35:43 <server_name> VERITAS: [ID 702911 user.error] No proxy found.
Nov 29 17:41:53 <server_name> last message repeated 10 times

The /var/adm/messages file may also show the following entries when a PBX command such as pbxcfg is given an invalid option.  These errors would indicate a command was entered incorrectly and can be safely ignored.
Nov 29 18:55:02 <server_name> VERITAS: [ID 702911 user.error] V-103-21
Nov 29 18:55:02 <server_name> Error: Invalid command!

Resolution:
By default, PBX will log messages to the system log.  To disable logging to the system log,  run the following command:
# cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
# ./vxlogcfg -a -p 50936 -o 103 -s LogToOslog=false

It should not be necessary to restart PBX for this setting to take effect. Any future PBX log information should no longer appear in the system logs. If these messages continue to appear in the system logs,  refer to TechNote  http://support.veritas.com/docs/279381 for information on restarting PBX.

Unified log entries for PBX can still be viewed using the vxlogview command.  The following example will display all PBX log messages for the last 24 hours:
# cd /usr/openv/netbackup/bin
# ./vxlogview -p 50936 -o 103 -t 24:00:00
