Backup of Oracle table spaces fails with the error message "'ALTER TABLESPACE SYSTEM BEGIN BACKUP' failed. Oracle status=1123"

Problem

Backup of Oracle table spaces fails with the error message "'ALTER TABLESPACE SYSTEM BEGIN BACKUP' failed. Oracle status=1123"

Error Message

Backup Job Log:

The following entry can be observed in the Backup Exec Oracle Agent debug log:

ORAParseSQL: SELECT STATUS FROM SYS.DBA_TABLESPACES WHERE TABLESPACE_NAME = 'SYSTEM'
ORAParseSQL: ALTER TABLESPACE "SYSTEM" BEGIN BACKUP
SYSTEM :: Oracle error=1123
<-- CHANGE_DIR_STAT rc=fffffea9
GRFS_GET_INFO received cmd =1d, retcode=0

Cause

The Backup Exec for Windows Servers Agent for Oracle Server (Oracle Agent) is installed as a separate, add-on component of Backup Exec for Windows Servers. The Oracle Agent provides a complete solution for backing up and restoring database servers running single or multiple Oracle databases.
Before Oracle databases can be backed up, each database's Oracle Database Log Mode setting must be set to ARCHIVELOG and each database's Automatic Archival setting must be enabled. ARCHIVELOG must be enabled so the Oracle Agent can put each tablespace in Backup Mode prior to running the backup operation.

If the Oracle Database log mode is not in the archive mode, the backup job will fail with above error messages. (Figure 1)

Solution

To resolve this error message, put the Oracle database in the ARCHIVELOG mode. For information about putting an Oracle 9i and 10g database in Automatic Archive Log Mode using Oracle Enterprise Manager Console, please see the related document.
