Problem

Backing up an Exchange 2013 or Exchange 2016 IP less DAG with NetBackup.

Solution

Note: The following solution is not required if you have NetBackup 7.7.3 or later installed on the Exchange DAG nodes.

In the hosts entry within the host file on the NetBackup Master/Media Servers (some users have also included this in the clients hosts file, it all depending on the underlying network configuration) , assign the DAG virtual name to the IP address of  any one of the physical nodes within the DAG. This will allow backups and restores  to function as long as the node you have  assigned is active.

Note, You simply need to have a hosts file entry which has the DAG virtual name assigned to the IP address of a node that is up and working.

** This HOSTS entry for the DAG virtual name must be present on the NBU Master, any NBU Media servers involved, and each node of the DAG. **

There does not have to be an active database on this node. bpresolver can run on any node; The IP address needs to be a node that is up on the network and functioning for exchange properly.  If the node you have assigned goes down, backup and restore jobs will fail until the node becomes active again or until you modify the hosts file(s) to reflect a different node within the DAG which is active.
