When /usr/openv is in the exclude list of a Linux backup hosts, VMware backups will appear to complete successfully but will not contain any data.

If /usr/openv is in the exclude list on a Linux VM (virtual machine) backup host, VMware backups will complete and report success (status code 0) while not backing up any data.  The resulting backup image is only 32K (see figure):

Error Message

No error is reported.


NetBackup mounts the VMware snapshot under /usr/openv/netbackup/online_util/fi_cntl/ which was being excluded due to the entry in the exclude list.

Example exclude list:
# cat /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list

Remove /usr/openv from any exclude lists on the VMware Backup Hosts.

Support for Linux backup hosts began in the NetBackup with the VMware option maintenance release.

This includes NetBackup Appliances used as backup hosts.

Note: This issue does not affect Windows backup hosts.
