Problem

Backups of data on Mac OS X are failing with the error shown below. This is seen because the Remote Agent for Mac (RAMS) is crashing at random times during the backup.

Error Message

e000ff11 - A communications failure has occurred with a Linux or Unix resource.

Cause

The crash in RAMS is seen when backing up certain files/folders that have an ACL (Access Control List) that is 1023 or 1024 bytes in length.

More details on ACLs can be found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH8010.

Solution

Temporary workaround:

Use the Backup Exec 2010 R3 Mac Agent for backups. Please contact Veritas Technical Support if you need assistance with implementing the workaround.

Solution:

Reduce the ACEs (Access Control Entries) for the affected files/folders so they do not match the length mentioned above. Veritas and/or Apple Support will need to be contacted to resolve this issue.
