Backups of data on Mac OS X are failing with the error shown below. This is seen because the Remote Agent for Mac (RAMS) is crashing at random times during the backup.

Error Message

e000ff11 - A communications failure has occurred with a Linux or Unix resource.

The crash in RAMS is seen when backing up certain files/folders that have an ACL (Access Control List) that is 1023 or 1024 bytes in length.

More details on ACLs can be found here:

Temporary workaround:

Use the Backup Exec 2010 R3 Mac Agent for backups. Please contact Symantec Technical Support if you need assistance with implementing the workaround.

Reduce the ACEs (Access Control Entries) for the affected files/folders so they do not match the length mentioned above. Symantec and/or Apple Support will need to be contacted to resolve this issue.

Applies To

Mac OS X 10.6.x - 10.9.x
