Problem

The entire size of VMDK files is backed up when backing up a RedHat virtual machine with more than 200GB in size thin-provisioned disks using the Agent for VMware Virtual Infrastructure (AVVI). The problem can occur even with Backup Exec 2012 Service Pack (SP) 3 and Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP4 where VDDK 5.1 U1 is included.

Cause

This is a known issue with VMware vSphere 5.0.x and 5.1.0.

Note that this is an issue with vSphere(ESXi server) though it is documented in VDDK release notes.

Solution

Upgrade to ESXi 5.1.1 or 5.5 (if Backup Exec 2012 SP3 is used). Please note that ESXi 5.5 is not suuported with Backup Exec 2010 R3.

Applies To

1) ESXi 5.0.x or 5.1.0 host
2) Linux guest operating system (ext2 and ext3 file systems)
3) Greater than 200 GB thin-provisioned VMDK
