NetBackup is reusing VM selection query results for longer than configured.

Problem

VM (Virtual Machine) selection query results may be reused for longer than expected, and in some cases indefinitely.

When older query results are used, VMs that have been created since that query will not be protected.

Cause

When a VMware policy is configured to select automatically through query and a non-zero value is used for the Reuse VM selection query results for option, query results may be reused.

Query results are reused if the time since the query results were created falls within the period of time specified in the Reuse VM selection query for option.

The root cause of this issue is a defect that updates the creation time of the query results to the time when they are reused.

Effectively, the reuse of the query results is being determined based on the last time the query results were used rather than the time when they were created.

If the period of time between policy execution is shorter than the period of time specified in the Reuse VM selection query for option, the same query results will be reused indefinitely.

If this occurs, newly created VMs will not be discovered and protected.

Solution

The formal resolution for this issue (Etrack 3364891) was scheduled to be included in the following release:

  • NetBackup 7.6 Maintenance Release 2 (7.6.0.2), currently scheduled for release in 2014

When NetBackup 7.6.0.2 is available, please access the following link for download and README information:

Workaround:
For all VMware Intelligent Policies set the Reuse VM selection query results for option to 0.  This option is available under the Clients tab of VMware policies with the Select automatically through query radio button selected (see figure):

Best Practices:
Symantec strongly recommends the following best practices:
1. Always perform a full DR backup prior to making any changes to your environment.
2. Always make sure that your environment is running the latest version and patch level.
3. Perform periodic "test" restores.
4. Subscribe to technical articles.
