begather fails to start with 'error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory' error

Problem

The begather utility fails to start with the following error on RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) 6.x.

# cd /opt/VRTSralus/bin
# ./begather
./begather: error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
 

Error Message

error while loading shared libraries: libstdc++.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

Cause

This error indicates that the libstdc++.so.5 library is not in the /usr/lib or /usr/lib64 directory. It is not installed by default.

Solution

Install the libstdc++5 package from the Linux OS media. (e.g. compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-69.el6.i686.rpm for 32bit or compat-libstdc++-33-3.2.3-69.el6.x86_64.rpm for 64bit depending on the server type)
