Unable to access 'Manage Tasks' section of console when using Symantec System Recovery Management Solution (SSR-MS).

Problem

When attempting to access the Manage Tasks section of the Symantec System Recovery Management Solution (SSR-MS) console, 'Error reading user preferences' is seen. This renders the entire Manage Tasks section of the console inaccessible.

Error Message

The following errors are seen in the Symantec Management Platform (SMP) logs:

( Exception Details: System.ArgumentNullException: Value cannot be null.

Cause

This issue is caused by an incorrect entry for localhost (127.0.0.1) in the hosts file.

Solution

  1. Remove the incorrect entry for localhost in the hosts file (\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts)
  2. Restart IIS (run IISRESET RESTART from command prompt)
  3. Restart Altiris service
