A hotfix is now available for this issue in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned in this article. Refer to the Hotfix link under Related Documents at the end of this article to obtain the hotfix needed to resolve the issue.

Backup Exec 2012 Rev 1798 Service Pack 2 (TECH203155) or the most current service pack available for this version of the product.
Backup Exec 2010 R3 Rev 5204 Service Pack 3 (TECH203157) or the most current service pack available for this version of the product.

Workaround:
Please perform 1 or 2.

1. Restore GRT items from the original set i.e. tape.
2. Redirect the restore of the entire VM to a different name or ESX host and extract the data needed from the virtual machine.
