Redirected restore of certain Enterprise Vault databases the restore job fails, when redirected to SQL 2012 server, with the following error:

Error Message

V-79-65323-6361 - The operating system returned the error 5 (Access is denied.)

SQL Server 2012 security restrictions have been enhanced. These enhanced security restrictions prohibit Backup Exec from creating a required directory under the SQL Server's default database location, typically located under %Program Files%.

This issue is observed only when SQl Server 2012 services are configured to run under a server account such as "NT Service\. It is also specific to streaming backup jobs. It does not affect snapshot backup jobs..

Because the Backup Exec SQL Agent is configured by default to use the snapshot backup feature, this error does not occur when you run standard SQL backup jobs of the Enterprise Vault server using Backup Exec and the SQL Agent. However, the Backup Exec Enterprise Vault Agent does not support the snapshot backup feature and only performs streaming backup of all Enterprise Vault entities.

Try the following steps as a workaround to this issue:

  1. Change the service credentials for 'Microsoft SQL Server' service to Local System and then attempt redirected restore.
  2. If the first solution does not solve the issue, attempt a redirected restore where the SQL instance name is same as same as the SQL instance name that you originally backed up.
