---Cannot install license.
----Error EC8F17C8: Invalid serial number: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.
This error will occur if the license key for the wrong edition of Symantec System Recovery is entered. For instance, if a Symantec System Recovery Desktop Edition license is attempted to be installed in Symantec System Recovery running on a Windows 2008 R2 Server, the error will occur.
The correct license edition of Symantec System Recovery needs to be installed for the version of Windows running on the system to be backed up. The following lists each Edition of SSR and what operating systems are supported by each:
SSR Desktop Edition licenses can only be used to license SSR installed on computers running Windows XP, Vista, 7, and 8. The Desktop Edition license cannot be installed on any system running any version of Windows Server, Windows Small Business Server, or Linux.
SSR Small Business Server Edition licenses can be used to license SSR installed on servers running Windows Small Business Server 2003, 2008, and 2011. The Small Business Server Edition license cannot be installed on any server running a full version of Windows Server or any version of Linux.
SSR Server Edition licenses can be used to license SSR installed on servers running Windows Server 2003, 2003 R2, 2008, 2008 R2, and 2012. The Server Edition license cannot be installed in SSR running on Linux.
SSR Virtual Edition licenses can be used to license SSR installed on servers running on an unlimited number of guest machines running on a single host machine. The guest machines can be running any supported version of Windows.
SSR Linux Edition licenses can only be install in SSR running on supported Linux distributions. Linux Edition license cannot be installed in SSR running on any version of Windows.
It is important to understand that each computer being backed up using SSR is individually licensed and must have the correct edition of the license installed.
If using the SSR console on a Windows 7 computer to configure backups on a Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, a valid SSR Server Edition license will need to be entered when connecting to the SSR agent running on the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer for the first time. If a SSR Desktop Edition license is entered when connecting to the SSR agent running on the Windows Server 2008 R2 computer, the invalid license key error will be seen since the Desktop Edition license is not valid for backing up any version of Windows Server.
