Backup of a virtual machine hosting Microsoft Exchange completes with the exception listed but does not fail. The Exchange server and virtual machine are fully recoverable but granular selections will not be available for Exchange restore operations.
V-79-57344-38735 - Backup Exec has discovered Microsoft Exchange Server on virtual machine 'MACHINE'. You must install the Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server on the media server to configure the granular recovery of mail stores, email messages, and attachments or to truncate the Exchange logs. The Agent for Microsoft Exchange Server is licensed on a per Exchange server basis.
Backup Exec can fully back up a virtual machine and any database applications such as Exchange installed on that machine with the Hyper-V or VmWare Agent (AVVI) without any additional licensing but the following conditions apply:
1. The virtual machine must be backed up through the Hyper-V or VmWare Agent selections
2. Granular selections will not be available
If granular restore capability is needed from Hyper-V or VmWare (AVVI) backups , then the Agent for Microsoft Exchange must be installed to enable that functionality.
If virtual machines are being backed up through RAWS as if they were physical Windows machines, then the Agent for Microsoft Exchange (or other appropriate application agent) will be required.
