VMware operations including VM discovery, snapshot, backup and restore may hang intermittently waiting on a response from vSphere environment

Problem

While performing VMware operations including VM discovery, snapshot, backup and restore, NetBackup processes such as (nbcs, bpfis, bpbkar, nbrestore) may hang intermittently because the SOAP function never returned.

Cause

The issue occurs when the vSphere environment does not respond to a soap request.

Solution

By adding a ResponseTimeout, NetBackup will timeout instead of waiting for the vSphere environment which may not return a response.

On Windows VMware Access/Backup Host add the following registry keys:

DWORD: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\SymVmTools\SymVmToolsCheckConnection
Set this to 1

DWORD: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\SymVmTools\SymVmToolsResponseTimeout
Set this to decimal 1500000 for 25 minutes timeout.

On Linux VMware Access/Backup Host, add the following configuration files:

Create or edit the following file:
# /etc/SymVmTools/VmTools.cfg

Add the following values to the file:
SymVmToolsResponseTimeout=1500000
SymVmToolsCheckConnection=1

! Note SymVmToolsResponseTimeout can be increased/decreased depending on the environment.
