Problem

NetBackup 2.5.x appliance leaks semaphores following VMware backups over SAN leading to memory exhaustion.

Cause

NetBackup 2.5.x appliances do not support multipath fibre connections to a SAN.

Can use the following command to identify leaked semaphores and their associated process:

# for semid in `ipcs -s | awk '/^0x/ {if ($1=="0x00000000") print $2}'`; do ipcs -s -i $semid; done | egrep -v "se               maphore|uid|mode|nsems|otime|ctime|semnum" | awk '{if ($5 != "0" && $5 != "") print $5}' | uniq | xargs ps -p

Solution

Solution:
1. Disable multipath SAN connectivity to one path to the NetBackup 2.5.x appliance media server VM proxy host for the purpose of VMware backups across a SAN.
2. Refer to 000018622, similar issue will be resolved by NetBackup 7.5.0.7 and NetBackup appliance version 2.5.4 with a emergency engineering binary available/attached for NetBackup 7.5.0.6 and NetBackup appliance version 2.5.3.

Note: NetBackup appliance version 3.0 *should* support multipath fibre configurations.

Applies To

2.5.x appliance configured as a media server and a VM proxy host for VMware backups. Issue occurs during VMware backups over SAN. The 2.5.x media server has multipath fibre connections configured.
