VMware virtual machine restored from an incremental backup set fails if Full and Incremental backup has been performed on different storage devices.

The following is an example of the different type of devices, but not limited to.

  • Full backups are targeted to a tape device.
  • Incremental backups are targeted to a disk storage device.

The restore job completed successfully and restores only the incremental set when incremental backup set is selected in the restore job

This issue will come up if full and incremental backup sets are on different storage devices, e.g. Full backup on Tape and Incremental backups on B2D device
