Catalog Meta-Data job that runs after an Exchange Granular Recovery Technology (GRT) enabled backup set hangs and does not complete.

After performing a GRT-enabled Exchange backup set, the Catalog Meta-Data job hangs and does not return a success or failure status until cancelled by the user.

Error Message

Upon cancellation, the job log displays the following message:

V-79-57344-2307 - A timeout occurred in the messaging involved in collecting additional information for synthetic backup.

A SGMon debug of Job Engine, RAWS and Agent Browser and Catalog during the metadata job reveals that the job stops, but the stop is not reported back to the Job Engine:

The behavior will occur when the 'UseTrueImageBackup' key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec for Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Backup has been set to DWORD value of 1 on the Backup Exec Server.



Set the 'UseTrueImageBackup’ key under:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\Engine\Backup\ to a value of 0

Symantec Corporation has acknowledged that the above-mentioned issue is present in the current version(s) of the product(s) mentioned at the end of this article. Symantec Corporation is committed to product quality and satisfied customers.
There are currently no plans to address this issue by way of a patch or hotfix in the current or previous versions of the software at the present time. This issue may be resolved in a future major revision of the software at a later time.
