Problem

Restore of VMware virtual machine fails with error: " 0xE0001204 - An error occurred while creating or accessing the directory specified for this operation." while trying to restore from a Backup to Disk folder (B2D) which is on NAS.

Error Message

Restore Job Log shows:-

 Final error: 0xE0001204 - An error occurred while creating or accessing the directory specified for this operation. Check the job log for details."
 

Final error category: Resource Errors.

V-79-57344-4611 - An error occured while creating or accessing the directory C:\TEMP specified for this operation.  Ensure that the directory is accessible and can  be written to.

BEEngine Log on media server shows:-

[8608] 06/24/12 22:50:42 [loops]              - ValidatePDILocation: Error. pdi location [\\nas1\vmware3-4\IMG000873] is not writeable.

Cause

This issue occurs if B2D is not accessible or Backup Exec System Account does not have permission to access it.

Solution

1. Make sure that B2D is online and accessible.

2. If B2D is on NAS, make sure NAS is powered ON and accessible using UNC path.

3. Check if Backup Exec System Account has full permission on NAS.
