After upgrading to Netbackup 7.5, Active Directory Granular Backups fail with a status code 1 when doing Cumulative or Differential backups (fulls continue to work).  Previous versions of Netbackup allow for an incremental schedule to perform a granular backup on the Active Directory Server. Since System State will only perform a full backup, the granular backups complete successfully - which is how it worked in previous versions.

This NetBackup 7.5 Admin Guide (linked below) excerpt from page 677 is a verification that this is still the functionality of an incremental schedule:

Active Directory backups are full backups
Any Active Directory backup is always a NetBackup full backup, whether it is a granular backup or not.

Whenever Active Directory is in a policys Backup Selections list, the Active Directory portion is always fully backed up, even when the backup type is incremental, differential or cumulative. Any other items in the Backup Selections list may use a differential or cumulative incremental backup type as indicated.  Even though a full backup is forced for an Active Directory backup, normal incremental rules are applied to the non-Active Directory items in the policy file list.

The Activity Monitor may contain messages similar to the following:

ETA of Fix:
The formal resolution for this issue (Etrack 2776074) is included in the following release:

  • NetBackup 7.5 Maintenance Release 4 (

Information on NetBackup is available in the Related Article linked below.

Workaround without hotfix:
Create a separate, additional policy
  • with only the Shadow Copy Components:\ directive as the sole backup selection
  • with only one schedule that is of the FULL type
  • with the Enable granular recovery option checked
If this issue is experienced on a NetBackup 5220 Appliance (2.5), please contact Symantec technical support, referencing this document ID and Etrack 2818929 to obtain an Emergency Engineering Binary (EEB) replacement for nbfsd containing a fix.
If running NetBackup, please upgrade to version or above.

Note: This hotfix is no longer publicly available, as all of its fixes are included in the NetBackup Maintenance Release.  If any of these issues are experienced in a NetBackup 7.5.0.x environment, the supported resolution is to apply the maintenance release.
