The following error is returned after upgrading to Backup Exec 2012 when using a partitioned robotic library or a library with a bar code reader:

Error Message

Error 0xe000821e - Library error - "Incompatible storage media detected in the robotic library"

This may occur because bar code rules have not been set up in Backup Exec 2012. This functionality was available in previous versions of Backup Exec through the user interface but in BE 2012 it must be performed via command line with BEMCLI.

Bar code rules and partitions are most commonly needed when there is a mismatch between the bar code labels and the tape media (LTO5 labels on LTO3 tapes for example) or when a library has a mixture of tape or drive formats being used.

1. The following article describes using BEMCLI to configure bar code rules:

2. If bar code rules are not needed, the robotic library can be reconfigured to avoid the error from occurring in Backup Exec. Each library is different, but usually there is an option to "Ignore Bar Code ID" that will prevent this particular error from being generated.

3. If the library does not require bar code labels and they are not in use, partitions are generally used to control which media will be associated with each drive. This error may be returned when Backup Exec uses a media with an unnassociated drive because that particular operation defaults to "any available drive" and/or because the correct drive was not available at the time. In this situation, the only workaround is to disable the drives that are not desired for the operation.
