Backing up Exchange 2007/2010 with GRT enabled to disk takes several hours during the snapshot phase, where Exchange non-GRT or GRT to tape take minutes.

Problem

During the GRT backup to disk of Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010, the snapshot phase takes an extended amount of time to complete.

Looking in the System event logs of the Exchange server it is noticed that the VSS start command and stop command occur hours apart.

When non-GRT or GRT to tape is used, this delay does not occur and you can see the VSS start and stop events within minutes of each other.
