Problem

Upgrading to Central Administration Server  (CAS)

Solution

1) First complete the Central Administration Server (CAS) upgrade. [Note: CAS upgrade and managed Backup Exec servers formerly called managed media servers (MMS) upgrade needs to be done separately.]

2) Upgrade all of the managed Backup Exec servers at the same time

       OR

perform a rolling upgrade, which is the process of upgrading the managed servers over a period of time.

For details about rolling upgrades, see Performing a rolling upgrade from Backup Exec 21.x to Backup Exec 22.x.

Note: In previous versions of Backup Exec, CAS was licensed as a separate option for Backup Exec. In Backup Exec , CAS is licensed as part of the Enterprise Server Option.

Note: The SAN Shared Storage Option is no longer available in Backup Exec. If the SAN Shared Storage Option was used in the previous version of Backup Exec, follow the instructions below with ther primary server and the secondary servers. The SAN primary server will be upgraded to a Central Administration Server. SAN secondary servers will be upgraded to managed Backup Exec servers and will have the Centrally managed Backup Exec server option and Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restore option selected.

Note: For more information about these settings, see Notes about the managed Backup Exec server configuration options for CAS
      • Centrally managed Backup Exec server - Enables the central administration server to manage this Backup Exec server, its storage devices, media, and job delegation. This option also enables this Backup Exec server to share storage devices with other managed Backup Exec servers.
      • Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restore - Enables this managed Backup Exec server to have unrestricted access to all centrally stored catalogs. This option also enables this managed Backup Exec server to restore data from any backup set on any storage devices that it shares. This option can be selected only if the Centrally managed Backup Exec server option is selected. Selecting both of these options enables the central administration server to have the greatest amount of control over this managed Backup Exec server.
      • Locally managed Backup Exec server – Enables the central administration server to monitor the managed Backup Exec server. However, the server and its devices, media, and backup jobs are controlled locally.

Notes about the managed Backup Exec server configuration options for CAS

When upgrading a managed Backup Exec server, determine how storage devices and data will be managed. The following information can help determine which configuration options to choose when installing a Managed Backup Exec server.

The following information applies if you select the option Centrally Managed Backup Exec server and also select the option Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restore:

  • This Backup Exec server becomes a Managed Backup Exec server.
  • A persistent network connection is required between the Managed Backup Exec server and the Central Administration Server.
  • The catalogs are centralized and are stored on the Central Administration Server. Note that this combination of options may not be suitable if a low-bandwidth network connection exists to the central administration server.
  • This managed Backup Exec server can access and restore backup sets for all storage devices that it shares with other Backup Exec servers.
  • The backup jobs that are created on the Central Administration Server can be load-balanced and delegated to this Managed Backup Exec server.
  • A rolling upgrade cannot be performed with this configuration. This Managed Backup Exec server must be upgraded at the same time as the Central Administration Server.

The following information applies if the option Centrally managed Backup Exec server is selected, but do not select the option Unrestricted access to catalogs and backup sets for restore:

  • This Backup Exec server becomes a Managed Backup Exec server.
  • A persistent network connection is required between the Managed Backup Exec server and the Central Administration Server.
  • The catalogs are in distributed mode by default, but can be changed. The catalogs for the jobs that run on this Managed Backup Exec server are stored locally.
  • This Managed Backup Exec server can access and restore any backup set stored on the storage devices that it hosts, regardless of which Backup Exec server runs the backup job. However, for the shared storage devices that other Backup Exec servers host, this managed Backup Exec server can access and restore only the backup sets that were created from backup jobs it ran.
  • The backup jobs that are created on the Central Administration Server can be load-balanced and delegated to this Managed Backup Exec server.
  • This option is recommended for use with the private cloud configuration.

The following information applies if you select the option Locally Managed Backup Exec server:

  • This Backup Exec server becomes a managed Backup Exec server.
  • A persistent network connection is not required between the managed Backup Exec server and the central administration server. Therefore, this option may be useful when a very low-bandwidth connection exists between the managed Backup Exec server and the central administration server. It may also be useful when the managed Backup Exec server cannot always be connected to the central administration server.
  • The catalogs are in distributed mode by default. The catalogs for the jobs that run on this managed Backup Exec server are stored locally.
  • The central administration server does not delegate jobs to this managed Backup Exec server.
  • This managed Backup Exec server cannot be used in a private cloud configuration.

Performing a rolling upgrade from CAS to CAS

Rolling upgrades can be performed in the CAS environment. A rolling upgrade allows an upgrade of the central administration server from Backup Exec 20.x to Backup Exec 21.x to 22.x first, and then upgrade the managed Backup Exec servers from Backup Exec 20.x to Backup Exec 21.x to 22.x over a period of time. Latest Service Pack for Backup Exec must be installed on the managed Backup Exec servers to include in the rolling upgrade.

Note: Forward compatibility is not supported in rolling upgrades. Therefore, any system that runs Backup Exec 21.x cannot protect a system that runs Backup Exec 22.x

Note: After the central administration server is upgraded to Backup Exec 22.x, you cannot add any new managed Backup Exec servers that use an older version of Backup Exec. For example, you cannot add a managed Backup Exec server that runs Backup Exec 20.x if the central administration server runs Backup Exec 22.x.

Veritas recommends that you do not keep a mix of versions in the CAS installation for an extended time. Key functionality for administering managed Backup Exec servers is missing in a mixed-version environment, which decreases your ability to properly administer the CAS environment.

In a rolling upgrade situation, you cannot perform the following operations on managed Backup Exec servers while those servers use the previous version of Backup Exec:

  • Change or delete the internal disk image media set.
  • Move media into or out of the built-in disk image media set.
  • Create or change a device pool entity.
  • Move devices into a device pool.
  • Delete one of the new “any” device pools, such as Any disk storage or Any tape cartridge.

In addition, the following types of jobs cannot be delegated to a managed server that is using a previous version of Backup Exec:

  • Conversion to virtual jobs.
  • Update server job.
  • Backup and restore validation jobs.
  • Jobs that use the new Dynamic Inclusion feature.
  • Jobs that use the new Simplified System Protection feature.

After upgrading the central administration server to Backup Exec 22.x, the following operations are supported on managed Backup Exec servers that run Backup Exec 21.x:

  • Backup
  • Restore
  • Inventory
  • Catalog

Note: After the central administration server is upgraded, the managed Backup Exec servers that are not upgraded may show "FIXEDDSK 000x" devices or "Unconfigured disk storage 000X" devices for the central administration server that were not there before the upgrade.
