GRT for Exchange, SQL, Active Directory, or Sharepoint continues to be used on virtual machine backups even though the checkbox to use Granular Restore Technology (GRT) has been unchecked in the backup job properties.
Backup Exec will report that "The option to enable the restore of individual files and folders from a virtual machine backup was selected for this backup." even after the checkbox to use GRT has been cleared (Figure 1) because this option only prevent GRT from running against the file system backups. It does not affect application GRT that is used for SQL, Exchange, and Active Directory.
The option to enable the restore of individual files and folders from a virtual machine backup was selected for this backup.
The Remote Agent for Windows Systems must be installed on the virtual machine to use Granular Recovery Technology to restore data.
If the GRT options for Active Directory, SQL and Exchange are not disabled then Backup Exec will still use application GRT during the backup job. (Figure 2)
To completely disable GRT, choose "Edit" from the Virtual Machine Application GRT Technology Settings section of the job properties and make sure that it no longer indicates GRT is enabled for those options.
