Attempts to update/add credentials to a NetBackup Media Server Deduplication (MSDP) media server fails "Invalid credentials for type PureDisk server"
F:\Program Files\Veritas\Volmgr\bin>tpconfig -add -storage_server pddemedia2 -stype PureDisk -sts_user_id msdpuser
Enter the OpenStorage host's password for User Id msdpuser:
Please re-enter the OpenStorage host's password to confirm it:
Invalid credentials for type PureDisk server pddemedia2
Authorization failed for OpenStorage server pddemedia2
spad session log (if using the NetBackup administration console Media and Device Management | Credentials | Storage Servers | Change Storage Server | Properties dialog box to select the media server credentials, <dedup_path>\log\spad\<msdp_mediasvr_hostname>\nbrmms.exe\spad\MMDDYY.log or if using tpconfig command-line, <dedup_path>\log\spad\<msdp_mediasvr_hostname>\tpconfig.exe\spad\MMDDYY.log ) reports that the msdp user account specified is incorrect:
October 19 11:02:25 ERR [00000000014BA1E0]: 25012: Authentication failed, No such user <accountname> !
October 19 11:02:25 ERR [00000000014BA1E0]: 25106: spaProcessing: Failed to authenticate, using <accountname>
or reports an invalid password was specified:
October 19 11:01:06 ERR [00000000014BA1E0]: -1: Authentication failed, invalid password !
October 19 11:01:06 ERR [00000000014BA1E0]: 25106: spaProcessing: Failed to authenticate, using <accountname>
Depending upon the spad session log error above, either the incorrect deduplication engine password was supplied or an invalid password was supplied.
The NetBackup Administration Console Media and Device Management | Credentials | Storage Servers | Change Storage Server | Properties uses DSM (Disk Service Manager) to communicate with the MSDP media server's RDSM (Remote Disk Service Manager) via NBRMMS (Remote Monitoring & Management Service) which in turn communicates with the NetBackup Deduplication Manager (spad) process. Hence the logs to focus on are DSM on the administration console system, RDSM/NBRMMS on the MSDP mediasvr and lastly MSDP mediasvr spad session logs.
If the spad session log reports 'No such user', consult the <dedup_path>\log\pdde-config.log on the MSDP media server, note the 'SPALOGIN =' line which contains the name of the media server deduplication engine account supplied when the MSDP media server was initially installed/configured. This accountname must be supplied after the '-sts_user_id' argument in any 'tpconfig -update -storage_server' or tpconfig -add -storage_server' command.
If the spad session log reports 'invalid password' consult the administrator who initially installed/configured MSDP for the password. If this is not possible, contact Symantec Support for further assistance.
